Rising 6th, 7th, and 8th Grades

Colleton Preparatory Academy - 2018 Summer Reading for Middle School

·         Middle school students are required to read two books from the list below according to the grade he/she will be enrolled in for the 2018-2019 school year.

·         Students must complete a project for one of the books and a journal for the other book. Be sure to choose a project from the list provided and follow all journal guidelines.

·         The project and “Reader Response Journal” are due Monday, August 20, 2018. Late assignments will receive a fifty point penalty and will only be accepted through Wednesday, August 22, 2018. These assignments will be combined to count as one major grade for the first quarter. *Please make sure both the project and the journal have the student’s first and last name on them to avoid losing points.*

Rising 6th grade students are required to read two of the following:

Rising 7th grade students are required to read two of the following:

Rising 8th grade students are required to read two of the following:

1.       Code Talker: A Novel About the Navajo Marines of World War II by Joseph Bruchac

2.       Last Man Out by Mike Lupica

3.       Nothing But the Truth by Avi

4.       Stargirl by Jerry Spinelli

5.       The Witch of Blackbird Pond by Elizabeth George Speare




1. “Setting your sights on the setting” Create a series of drawings and maps that represent the

    time and place (setting) of the story and describe to the class. This should be done on at least

    five sheets of copy paper. You can write notes on the back of the drawing to help guide you

    through the story.


2. “Plot the Plot” Create a timeline of the story’s events; be sure to include the most important

     events from the beginning to the end of the story. Be creative with this project…do not create

     on sheets of paper. Use a poster board or some other creative way to show these events.


3. “Theme Song” Create a song (any style) or poem that explains the big idea of the story. This

    should be at least a full page in length. (theme – a message/lesson the author presents to the



4. “Parallel the Genre” Write a short story that parallels (follows the same ideas and genre) the

    book you read. Is it a mystery, science fiction, realistic fiction, biography, or something else?

    This should be at least two full pages in length.


5. “Movie Time” Create a movie poster representing your book. Make sure to include the theme,

    the major characters, the author, the title, and an illustration (drawing done by you). This should

    be done on a regular size poster board.



Reader Response Journal


*Journals are to be handwritten.*

2. Setting: When and where the story takes place.


3. Plot: A summary of the novel.


4. Theme: The central message of the novel; the theme makes some statement about or expresses 

    some opinion. It is a lesson that you take away from reading the novel. Come up with something

    that is original. For example the subject of a story might be war while the theme might be the idea

    that war is useless.


5. Commentary: In a paragraph, give your response to the novel.  Give reasons why you would or

    would not recommend this novel to others.  Provide details from the novel to support your answer

    (What was your favorite passage, character, or idea of the book? Why?)
